Access to Hatteras Inlet Suspended/New Closures

On June 16, the NPS temporarily suspended all access to Hatteras Inlet.  Many other closures have been expanded.  jost notably the closure at Cape Point.

With the current configuration access to the point via ramp 44 may require that you drive through salt water.  Depending upon weather conditions, access via ramp 44 may not may not be possible during high tide.  Access to the point via the interdunal road off of ramp 44 is available only during low tide and that can be though, as well.  Access to the point from ramp 49 is not possible due to a closure which extends from the drain to the first interdunal road.  In short be careful when heading to the point and watch your tides–you may not be able to get off the point during high tide.  Plan ahead and take any medications or supplies needed should you have to stay for several hours.

There are a variety of other closures, either to protect breeding birds or because of narrow beach, which in effect have made through access from one ramp to the next impossible.
